New York City’s only landmarked district, the 19th
Century cast iron architecture that distinguishes SoHo from its neighbors
also made it a natural for the art spaces and galleries that put it on the
map in the 1980s. The cast iron buildings with ornate facades, Corinthian
capitals and columns, oversize windows and exquisite lobbies remain some of
the city’s finest architecture. And the interior, rundown warehouse spaces
made ideal for the artist renovations of the late 1970s and 1980s. But as
SoHo became synonymous with art galleries and extravagant exhibits, the
artists themselves began to seek cheaper rents in other parts of town as the
cost of living here soared. Still one of the trendiest spots in New York,
SoHo is now the epitome of upscale shopping and dining, mixed in with the
galleries that originally gave this historic, landmarked area its edge.
Beautiful floor-through loft spaces can be found here, South of Houston,
bordered by Crosby Street, Sixth Avenue and Canal Street, for a price. With
a location that is convenient to all, and the best of the best at your
fingertips, this diverse and fabulous neighborhood is a worthy investment.
